Finding a suitable rental property if you own a pet is no easy task that's why highly regarded Build to Rent operator Atlas Residential is committed to being pet-friendly across all of its UK sites.
"Research shows that one in every three pet owners can't find a suitable property to rent. With 45% of the population owning pets and the number of renters increasing sharply, that's a ridiculous situation. It's time for landlords to stop discriminating against pet owners and welcome them with open arms." Jonathon Ivory, Managing Director, Atlas Residential
Southampton's Bow Square, owned by Rockspring Property Investment Managers LLP ("Rockspring"), a PATRIZIA company and professionally managed by Atlas, has already welcomed ten feline residents into the building, along with a variety of other four-legged friends.
Other (human) residents are now being invited to consider adopting from Cats Protection, the UK's leading cat welfare charity, using its online Find-a-cat tool. The charity will be launching its Purrfect Landlords campaign later in the year to encourage responsible ownership and a reasonable approach from landlords. This includes limiting the number of cats which are permitted per property and ensuring cats are neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.
"Cats Protection believes that people who rent should not be deprived of the companionship, affection and love that cats can bring to a household. We are working with landlords to encourage them to consider allowing cats through reasonable pet clauses. We hope this will reduce the painful separation some owners have to go through when they move somewhere which does not allow pets." Madison Rogers, Advocacy & Government Relations Officer, Cats Protection
With many pet owners reporting that lettings agencies are 'unhelpful' when it comes to finding rental accommodation that suits the furry members of their families. Atlas is taking the opposite approach, to encourage pet ownership and to provide useful information on caring for pets to residents. Across the communities, the innovative Build to Rent provider is also exploring options for on-site events, ranging from cat care classes to environment enrichment and behavioural seminars.
"The makeup of the UK rental sector is changing rapidly. Over the past ten years, there has been a 74% rise in the number of households that rent their homes. Housing providers need to step up and ensure that the properties they offer meet the needs of potential customers - and that includes residents with four legs as well as those with two." Stephanie Smith, Director of Portfolio Operations - UK, Atlas Residential
As well as welcoming pets, the Build to Rent communities offer a variety of amenity spaces including club rooms, fitness centres and communal outdoor spaces, supported by dedicated, on-site teams. At Bow Square, Atlas has focused on delivering a new model of urban living, providing Southampton's renters with greater flexibility and enhance amenities, as well as the chance to keep their furry companions with them while they rent.
